  レンジャーズはマット・ハリソン、ニック・ウィリアムズ、ホルヘ・アルファロ、ジェイク・トンプソン、ジェラッド・アイコフ、アレック・アッシャーとの交換でフィリーズからコール・ハメルズとジェイク・ディークマン、そして金銭を獲得した。 ここ数年ハメルズが常にトレードの駒として名前が挙がるなかで、レンジャーズは移籍先の有力候補として見られてきた。今回もアストロズ、ドジャースとの熾烈な競争を経ての獲得となった。 左腕投手のハメルズは2018年まで年平均2350万ドルの契約が残っており、さらに2019年のオプションも持っている。このオプションの更新にはハメルズが以下の条件を満たすことが必要となる- 1) 2017と2018年に合計400イニング以上を投げ、2) そのうち200イニング以上は2018年に、3) さらに2018年シーズンを肩か肘の故障でDL入りしたまま終えないこと。このオプションはレンジャーズが600万ドルを払うことで破棄でき、場合によっては交渉で400万ドルカットすることもできる。このうち、フィリーズが950万ドルを負担することになる。
