Charting Darvish

Yu
On Sunday, Yu Darvish took the hill against the Seattle Mariners. Yu didn’t have his best stuff, but he still makes some hitters look foolish and can be dominant in small stretches. While the Rangers lost 4-3, Darvish kept the Rangers in the game. We have taken Darvish’s start against the Mariners, and broken it down pitch by pitch, with the help of BrookBaseball.net and their Pitch f/x tool.

For space purposes, we did not differentiate between 4 seam fastballs and 2 seam fastballs. Also different outlets have some off speed pitches as sliders, while others have them as curve balls. I used mostly sliders in terms of off speed with a few exceptions. (L) is looking and (S) is swinging. Click the Pitch f/x image to enlarge it.

Yu was not happy with himself for the 4 pitch walk to Chavez, but battled back to get out of the inning with a double play and a strikeout of Franklin. The emotional display by Darvish after the strikeout was exhilarating. However, the pitch count has risen to 108 after 7.
