Minor League Monday: July 22nd

(AAA) Round Rock ExpressPlayer of the week: Jake Brigham

A year ago, the Rangers traded Brigham to get Geovany Soto from the Cubs. But 3 and a half months later, they brought him back, and that is working out for the Rangers.

In 18 games at Round Rock, Brigham has posted a 3.88 ERA with a 55/26 K/BB in 67.1 innings. Furthermore, in last 9 outings (5 starts), he’s holding the opposing hitters a .204/.251/.210 slash with a 36/8 K/BB in 45 innings.SDI had an interview with Brigham back in 2012.

(AA) Frisco RoughRiders

Player of the week: Alex Buchholz

Buchholz has 1873 minor league plate appearances and will turn 26 in about 2 months. No one sees the 3rd baseman as a prospect, but he’s been red hot lately.

In 19 July games, he’s hitting a Puigian .375/.438/.708 in 80 PA, including 4 HR in a 4-day span  last week. Through the season, he has a .284/.339/.486 slash with 13 HR and has been Frisco’s 2nd best hitter behind Brett Nicholas.

(High-A) Myrtle Beach Pelicans

Player of the week: Rougned Odor

Odor has the Carolina League’s 13th best OPS (.829). That’s remarkable considering he started the season as the 2nd youngest player in the league, and after Francisco Lindor’s departure to AA, he’s the youngest now.

He’s been consistent through the season. And in 27 2nd half games, he’s hitting .366/.405/.500. @TepidP’s favorite is currently mashing at the high-A level.

(Low-A) Hickory Crawdads

Player of the week: Ryan Rua

Patrick Despain wrote this fantastic article about Rua  earlier in the month, so I just go with his recent stats here.

Most of Hickory’s hitters are struggling lately, but Rua is an exception. In 14 games so far in July, he’s hitting .340/.456/617 with 4 HR and 12 RBI in 57 PA, and awarded last week’s SAL Player of the week. The 23-year old 2nd baseman keeps drawing people’s attention.

(SS-A) Spokane Indians

Player of the week: Ryne Slack

Slack signed with the Rangers as an undrafted FA out of a junior college in South Carolina in 2012. The left handed reliever started the season at Hickory, but yielded a .291/.406/.509 slash line against despite striking out 18 in 14 innings. His numbers have bounced back after he got sent down to Spokane. In 9 SS-A outings (1 start), he’s holding the opponent to a .214/.329/.300, striking out 25 while walking 9 in 22 innings.

Oh, and he turns 21-year old today. Happy birthday, Ryne!

(Rookie) Arizona Rangers

Player of the week: Kevin Sosa

The 18-year old Venezuelan right hander was the opening day starter for the 2013 Arizona Rangers. Since then, he’s posted a 2.76 ERA with a 21/8 K/BB in 32.2 innings for the baby Rangers squad.
