Let’s cut to the nuts and bolts. The Rangers want you. We all know that you want to win, and what better place to be? There is a huge fan base here. The Rangers are a World Series contender again, and your bat makes them even better. They have been to two straight World Series, and have improved in the off-season with the addition of Yu Darvish. The owners, Ray Davis and Bob Simpson have money, and they are committed to winning, just as much as Nolan, Jon Daniels, Thad Levine and the rest of the front office.
Here’s the thing. They aren’t willing to give you a ten year contract. They have to be able to put players around you, or re-sign the existing core. They aren’t going to give one player a contract that stifles them, and limits their ability to put a winning team on the field. Everyone knows that you are looking for “Pujols money.” I’m sorry Prince, but it is not going to happen in Texas. At least not a 10 year deal.
So here’s what the Rangers can offer. They can offer a 5-7 year contract with a huge annual average value, making you a very high paid player, with a chance to win the World Series. You are suited to play 81 games in Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.
If you haven’t heard, there is a jet stream that blows out to right field here. You have the ability to hit 60 home runs every year as a Ranger. What good is 60 home runs if they don’t have the other players around you that make them capable of winning? Ask A-Rod.
Texas has Beltre, Kinsler, Nelson Cruz, Mike Napoli, Josh Hamilton and a very talented pitching staff. They want to keep them in tact. So, a ten year deal would not allow them to do that. They also have Mitch Moreland to play first base if you want to go to Washington or Baltimore and not win immediately. He is not the player you are, but he’s not terrible. He had a wrist issue last year and that limited his ability at the plate. The Rangers think he can be an effective player.
Also, JD, Nolan and staff would like to keep Josh Hamilton as well. That may not be possible if you sign here, but there is a chance that he stays if you’ll sign a reasonable contract. Michael Young’s dollars come off the payroll in two years, so that chance is there.
The questions is, “what are we waiting for?” Your agent is Scott Boras. He’s very intelligent and very shrewd. But at this point he may have outsmarted himself. So let’s get this done. Let’s get Scott and JD on the phone. Win for a long time with a lot of money vs. maybe win with a truck load of money. I understand that you want to set your family up with a secure future. You’ll have the opportunity to do that with endorsement deals and the other things that come with a championship. 5 years of 50 home runs carries a lot of weigh, my man.
So, in closing. Tell Scott to stop the charade and lets get this done, and win a bunch of World Series rings in Texas.
