Goat Of The Week: Julio Borbon

As the resident villain of SDI, I will have a new series where I feature a guy who receives the lion share of grief for the week whether it be a Ranger or their opponent.

Borbon’s greatest contribution to the Rangers’ organization was sitting for the above picture. When Borbon is referenced, it’s usually as “Poor Julio Borbon” because of this great tumblr page. Even SDI’s own Peter Ellwood recently tried to trade the lemon that is Borbon. He isn’t goat of the week; more like goat of the year.
In 2009, Borbon hit .312/.376/.414 with 19 stolen bases in 46 games. He followed this up with a great season defensively in 2010, but with very pedestrian numbers at the plate (.276/.309/.340). Since then, Borbon has seen action in only 33 games. Cuban defector Leonys Martin was signed in 2011 to be the centerfielder of the future, and Craig Gentry also passed up Poor Julio on the depth chart.

Borbon is entering his prime at 27, so there is a real possibility of him resurrecting his career a la Nelson Cruz and Chris Davis. His 2.4 career rWAR in 216 games is better than Mitch Moreland’s 1.4 career rWAR in 305 games, but that doesn’t fit the local media and fans’ narrative. Perception is a tricky thing that is tough to judge. The bottom line is despite having a very solid Spring Training, Borbon didn’t have a spot on this team. He needs a fresh start and will most likely get that in the next couple of days.

Here’s a clip of Julio in a simpler time.

Best of luck to that dreamy guy sitting next to the storage shed. You’ll catch that rainbow someday.
